Young Clevelanders React to Loss of Basketball Star

Via Intel
When NBA star LeBron James announced to the world that he would be leaving his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers to play with the Miami Heat, many citizens of Cleveland, Ohio were devastated. Teens from the Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland shared their thoughts on James’ decision with NewsHour Extra and weighed in on what his absence will mean for their city.

Dario Pereira, age 17Benjamin

To have LeBron leave makes me feel disappointed. I thought that he would have stayed with us until we won. On the other hand, he did dedicate himself to us for several years and tried his hardest. Plus, he wants to win; that’s what his heart is set to.

I’m mad that he didn’t tell us (his decision) to our faces in Cleveland, but went to Connecticut to tell us on national television. I hope that LeBron doesn’t win a championship in Miami just because he betrayed us. I know no one could’ve stopped him from making his choice.

LeBron says that if we are true fans we would support his decision. If he really loved Cleveland as much as he claimed he did, he would have never left. LeBron James has just proven with his recent actions that he has no concept of what it means to be a true fan. I feel like he is basically saying Cleveland has no potential. To me Cleveland is going to become another city like Detroit. Cleveland will go down instead of going up because LeBron attracted people to Cleveland.

The effect LeBron’s leaving will have on us people in Cleveland and the state of Ohio is that without him, we have no identity. He made Cleveland look good. Without LeBron, our team will go down. Cleveland will not bring in as much money as it used to when he was here because he brought in sponsors. Before LeBron, the seats in the stadium were not filled.

LeBron has had a huge impact on the Cleveland sports system. He was ranked #1. Everyone depended on him.

Alysia Taylor, age 16

JosephWhen LeBron James made the announcement that he was leaving Cleveland and will be joining Wade and Bosh in Miami, my immediate reaction was that The King wants a Ring and that his decision had nothing to do with money. I felt a dark cloud hanging over Cleveland; full of betrayal, disrespect and disgust. But despite all of that, many people supported him in his decision. I agreed with him when he said that the best thing for LeBron was to play for the Miami Heat. He had many good reasons for not staying and not re-signing with the Cavs. I feel that anyone put in his situation would have done the same thing.  The biggest disappointment was the way he went about making his decision. To me he led many people in Cleveland to believe that he was going to stay. I feel as if Cleveland should have been the first to know about his choice. He should have talked to the people in Cleveland and explained the reasons for his decision. If LeBron would have done this, I truly believe he would have kept the respect of his Cleveland Fans and they would still acknowledge him as the King. I feel the burning of his jersey and the words that were said about him were well deserved. And lastly to LeBron, you didn’t lose your fans, you just lost their respect.

Genesis Ramos, age 14

MarisaI think LeBron’s decision to leave the Cavs is a good decision. He was really the only one who did anything for the Cavs. His goal is to win something, and that something is called the championship game. These past years, (the Cavaliers) didn’t win anything. Yet he has won the Most Valuable Player (trophy) and is very talented. He knows that, but he wants more than that. Every Cavs fan is disappointed and highly upset, but I think they are being selfish. He loves Cleveland but he wants to move forward. My personal opinion is that the Cavs really didn’t do anything. If it wasn’t for LeBron, they wouldn’t have even made it to the playoffs. That is what I think about LeBron leaving the Cavs.

Cashané Jordan, age 16

JeremiahIn my eyes, LeBron James was one of the people who can say he made it because of his hard work and dedication. His talent landed him the first round draft pick in 2003 to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Coming to Cleveland fresh out of high school, LeBron had many loyal and supportive fans. Then all of a sudden all of that went out the window when he finally came out with his choice to join the Miami Heat for next year’s basketball season.

LeBron’s choice to leave Cleveland affected many people, not only in Cleveland but all over the world. Many young people looked up to LeBron James because of the person he was and the type of effort he put forth to make things happen. I personally feel his choice to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers to join the Miami Heat will affect the children the most after the disappointment from the fans. I must admit I am going to miss watching LeBron James play for the Cavs wearing his number 23 jersey.

No one really knows why he made the choice to leave Cleveland except him, and I’m sure if he were to explain, everyone would have a better understanding of it. This should be a lesson learned anyway. I love LeBron James, but we have other options even though we lost our star of the team. We can still work hard and play with the rest of the teammates we still have left who chose to stay and be a part of the Cleveland Cavaliers. That is how I feel about LeBron James leaving Cleveland.
