Tanzanian Teen Dances to Educate on HIV

June 5, 2011 marks the 30th anniversary of the identification of the deadly disease AIDS.
Why this Student Spoke Out
HIV/AIDS is an epidemic that affects millions of people worldwide, especially those in developing countries such as Tanzania.

 

Over 90 percent of the 33.3 million people infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, live in developing countries.

Recently, NewsHour Extra traveled to Tanzania with The Global Fund to talk with young people about their daily lives and how education helps prevent HIV/AIDS.

A bit about this Author

Pili Muhammad, 16, cannot afford to pay her school fees so she works as a traditional dancer with PSI Tanzania, a non-profit organization that hosts weekly events for youth. Through dance and games, PSI aims to reduce the rate of new HIV infections by 25 percent by 2012.
