Poetry nurtures intellectual and emotional growth and the kind of self-reflection so useful to students on their long journey toward adulthood. But the complexity of connecting kids to the real value and personal satisfaction of poetry can be daunting. videoplayer.jpg The NewsHour Poetry Series provides a terrific resource and convenient online tool for teachers to expose their students to real poets at work. The site contains short video interviews and readings by 25 contemporary American poets and the collection is growing monthly. Your students could, for example, sample a number of poets before selecting one to focus on in more depth. Watch Li-Young weave together images that describe the experience of immigrating to America or Kevin Young wrestle with the demons of history and try to

reclaim the word “Confederate.”

Teachers of younger students can watch Jack Prelutsky play with words and music - there’s even one video of boys and girls describing why they love Prelutsky poems.

The series also includes thoughtful, in-depth reports on current debates in poetry. Also be sure to check out the poetry page on NewsHour Extra.

The entire series is supported by the Poetry Foundation which has a wealth of online resources in addtion to the NewsHour material mentioned here. videoplayer.jpg poetryfoundationimage.jpg
