The NSDL Middle School Portal hosts a weekly blog that provides teachers with ideas on how to integrate current news in science, math, engineering, or technology (STEM) into their teaching. The NSDL editors pick an interesting news story, Courtesy of DOE/NREL, Credit - David Parsons. provide a summary, and some insight into the questions raised by the article. The related middle level, grades 5-8 content standards of the National Science Education Standards are included as well as ideas for turning the news event into an inquiry-based lesson. Topics over the last few weeks include seed gene banks, wind farms in Texas, skin grafts, and human sense of smell. Browse all the posts at Connecting News with National Science Education Standards.

Carol Minton Morris : Global scientific discoveries often impact previously understood "facts." It seems critical that teachers have resources like this one that link science news, packaged with standards and good teaching practices, to make sense of how "facts" evolve over time. In the wake of the Katrina disaster, for example, this very useful blog post gives teachers a nutshell overview of current sea surface temperature research and explains how to develop part of an inquiry-based classroom climate and weather unit: "Ask them what they think would be different about the world's hurricanes if the sea surface temperature increased just a half degree C.?"

Brad Edmondson : The excellent "Connecting Standards" blog is part of NSDL's "Expert Voices" page, which also offers blogs that highlight items in the NSDL Collection, new items that have been added in the last few months. and much more.

Frank Baker : Did anyone see the recent news story on "Carbon Credits"? I am wondering if this issue is on the radar screens of many K-12 science classrooms?
