The soaring price of rice and other basic necessities threatens to worsen into a global food crisis, what one United Nations official called a “silent tsunami.” Even Costco and Sam’s Club are limiting their bulk U.S. sales of rice this week. This is a good opportunity to explore with your students the world of global food production that extends far beyond the well stocked shelves of American supermarkets.
