CURRENT NATIONAL OR GLOBAL "PROBLEM & SOLUTION" WORKSHEET

Select a news article or feature that describes a global political, social, economic or other problem. Read it carefully. Then compete the following activities and questions.

 

USE YOUR OWN PAPER.

STEP 1: What is the problem?

a. Summarize the problem using facts from the article.
b. Explain why this situation is a problem.
c. Describe what might happen if the problem is not corrected. Support this prediction with facts from the news article.

STEP 2: What are the opposing sides in the controversy?

a. Identify the "special interest groups" affected by this problem.
b. Identify others who may be affected by this problem.
c. Summarize the responses to this problem by each group.

STEP 3: What is the best solution?

a. Identify the possible solutions discussed in this article.
b. Brainstorm other possible solutions.
c. Explain which solution is most likely to be implemented.
d. Can this solution lead to other problems? Explain.
e. What do you think is the best solution to this problem?
f. Is there a difference between c and e? Why?
