Third-Party Candidate Ralph Nader Outlines his Platform

Independent Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader is on the ballot in 45 States, do you know who he is?

Ralph Nader, running for the third time, gives his take on the current U.S. economic situation and criticizes Senators McCain and Obama for targeting the middle class, but ignoring the poor in America.

Nader talks about his plan to reestablish regulation in the banking and financial system and return more power to people who own shares in companies.

On foreign policy, Nader criticizes the Republican and Democratic candidates for their willingness to continue fighting in Afghanistan. He also calls for a six-month withdrawal of troops from Iraq.

"[The poor] do the dirty work for us, and they're never mentioned in the campaign. It's like the poor is a no-no. And yet the poor Americans are shrinking the middle class because a lot of middle classes are going into poverty." -Ralph Nader, presidential candidate

"There's got to be justice. People are crying out against this gross unfairness, where these bosses on Wall Street tank their own companies, un-employ hundreds of thousands of workers, and jump ship into a golden lifeboat." -Ralph Nader, presidential candidate

"Nobody conquers Afghanistan. The British didn't do it. The Soviet Union didn't do it. We're not going to do it. It's a scar on the conscience of Obama and McCain that they are ready to get us into a massive quagmire." -Ralph Nader, presidential candidate

1. How many main political parties are there in the United States? How does that compare to other countries?

2. What does it mean if someone is an independent voter, instead of a Republican or Democrat?

1. Did you know of Ralph Nader before watching this video? Why or why not?

2. What are some of the pros and cons of having a primarily two-party system?

3. Why do you think people run as third-party candidates even if they have little chance of winning?

4. Imagine you are a third party candidate, what would be your platform? What would be your party's name?

elizabeth ellis : THERE ARE SIX Candidates for President who are on enough ballots to win. STUDENTS should check the abc's of each candidate, and offer a presentation of their favorite to the class and then, open the discussion to the question of "what is ON TRACK" for America? It is high school level homework that every voter should do. These are the websites for the six: www.baldwin08.com www.bobarr2008.com www.johnmccain.com http://votetruth08.com www.votenader.org www.barackobama.com And, what is the real character of a politician, someone who has earned a vote with hard work and achievements, or someone who can talk big, but does little to back it up. And, what is more important, money or public interest results? A basic QUIZ written by the students of the abc's and tests and making parents have to take their students' quizes and get an A before they can vote, would be great!

Elp Tique : Dear Mr. Lehrer, You cannot have a democracy when only a few have voice. How much longer will you accept that? Nader should have had, at least on your news hour, the same coverage the other candidates received. Then, let the best win. Thanks. Elp. PS: In a full debate, the intellectual abilities of Mr. Nader would have crashed the trembling intelligence of Mr. Obama and Mr. Mc Cain.

JR : The question about how many parties their are is really almost impossible to answer. Better would have been how many parties are on enough ballots to mathematicly win? (6). I think most teachers would agree that the U.S. democracy needs a serious overhaul. Think about it who controls the debates? Or in what other (Democracy) could the guy who got less votes win? (2000 ring a bell). I would think that Ralph Nader would get a lot of support from teachers as he actually addresses the dispraportional amount of money that is being wasted on the military which could be used for things like paying teachers a living salery.

Mrs. A. : I hope teachers are covering more about Nader than just his current candidacy; his track record as a consumer advocate since 1965, the things he was instrumental in obtaining for the American public that are taken for granted today (i.e. The Freedom of Information Act, seatbelts, air bags, the Environmental Protection Agency....the list is long and always honorable) Nader is not and never has been for sale, and his lifetime achievements (which outshine any political leaders by a mile) prove it.

i love nader : i voted for him in 2000. i am inspired by him. he is unapologetic and well spoken about the way this government has handed over the nation to corporate interests. he has always been a champion for the poor, the working class - the People. this is the most important vote of my life...yet, as much as i love nader, i will have to vote for obama. obama has ideas that i can support- particularly regarding youth contributing a trem of service to this nation. ultimately, tho; i want to see this country in the hands of nader--maybe in 4 years. obama, in some ways, is the baby step nader needs to change american politics. thank you, -c'est moi

Student Nader Raider : Vote Independent Ralph Nader to register support for a candidate that represents the people's interests, not the corporate interests: 1 end the war AND occupation in Iraq supported by Iraq Veterans Against the War 2 end "the war on terror" in Afghanistan and Pakistan where more civilans have died than 9/11 in a country extremely hostile to foreign occupation having been invaded by the British empire, Soviets & now US led NATO 3 will cut the excessive military spending >50% when US is in debt 4 will stop corporate bailouts at taxpayers expense 5 invest in single payer universal healthcare instead of pay or die cororate system Ralph Nader is on 45 state candidates and 5 write in states. The only reason why he won't win is if people who support his platform vote AGAINST him.

Leonard Jenkins : It is a tragedy that the bi-party political system, and the corporate controlled media - has not only locked him out of the debates, but also made it impossible for him to win. As an American, I shed tears, to think that such a dedicated and smart person (with such integrity) will not get to save us from national crisis, which has been said (by Colin Powell) to begin shortly after January 20 2009.

mrm : Thank you for giving Ralph Nader, who speaks as a voice for the people, air time, finally! The two party candidates are so similar in their speech and issues, that it is repulsive. We need to hear people like Ralph Nader speak on public media about real solutions to the problems we face, not just empty sound bites. Ralph is the ONLY non-corporate candidate who's been a servant of the public good for over 40 years and who speaks nothing but the truth, because he hasn't been bought by corporate interests. He is the change we MUST believe in.

One thing for people to consider is a potential switch to approval voting in future elections. We need to raise awareness of this easy fix to our current electoral process.

Except for the grave lack of democratic enagement by the people, through meaningful structured dialogue, which seems to be a tragic universal disease of our civilization, Ralph Nader has no peer. He is the only honest, dedicated, coimmitted, and uniquely dependable candidate in this election.

Paul : Even if you don't agree with everything that Nader/Gonzalez stand for, it is a pleasure to listen to 2 intelligent human beings discuss the issues. The rhetoric from the Republicans and Democrats is innocuous and insulting. It would be an interesting experiment to give Nader/Gonazalez the air time they deserve and then see how Americans react. As a registered Republican, this will be my 3rd vote for Nader.

JAN : This was an interview of great depth and substance! Ralph Nader is extremely bright, articulate, well-informed and well-versed on the issues and exceptionally well-spoken and I might add, plain-spoken too! Though I discern he has a very high intellect, yet I can understand the position he takes on every issue! Why then does not this highly qualified and formidable candidate, get the equal time, consideration and attention by the media as those representing the Democratic and Republican parties? I guess sadly the answer lies here, in "Anon"'s comment above: Anon : Thank you for posting this interview with Ralph Nader. He is the true voice of people which is suppressed by the corporate owned media. Too bad . . because he's the only one who would really be an agent for CHANGE!

Independent Queen : Go Ralph! It's time for a serious third-party. INDEPENDENTS to the rescue! A two-party primary is antiquated and unrepresentive! The Dems and the Reps represent the prevailing oligarchy! What happened to DEMOCRACY? The popular vote (plurality) should rule...not an antiquated and manipulated electoral college which includes "hand-picked" super delegates. We need to return this country to the people, not the ultra wealth! The only clear and objective choice is the INDEPENDENT PARTY.

So I dug in determined to find the candidate I most agreed with. I suprised myself; it's Ralph Nader. A friend told me that voting for Nader was the same as not voting, but I disagree. I think voting for Nader is as insignificant as Rosa Parks refusing to go to the back of the bus. It's time a statement is made and NO POINT IS MADE with a vote for McCain or Obama. It is NOT about voting for the lesser of two evils...if there is a better alternative: I'm on board for Nader/Gonzalez
