Branch Rickey

Prior to his involvement with Jackie Robinson, what was his reputaion as far as civil rights is concerned. Was he an activist or was he just exploiting an opportunity to improve his team.

Roger Kahn responds:

Before the signing of Jackie Robinson, Branch Rickey was known mostly as a shrewd baseball executive, and essentially the architect of the major league farm system. He devised that while running the St. Louis Cardinals. I think his first motive in first signing Robinson comes from a sense of morality. He recognized segregated baseball as unfair. If, as it developed, Robinson turned out to be a great attraction at the gate, well Rickey was a prudent businessman and in no way allergic to profits.
