Jackie RobinsonFifty years ago Jackie Robinson crossed the color line in baseball to join the Dodgers at Ebbets Field. He was the first African-American to play in the major league since the turn of the century and opened the sport for good. A National League champion, Robinson led the team to victory while withstanding steady abuse on and off the field for his color. A man who turned the other cheek, Jackie Robinson's life was, for many, a symbol of the fight for civil rights in the United States.

In "Memories of Summer: Jackie Robinson When Baseball Was an Art and Writing About It a Game," author Roger Kahn paints a lively picture of the early days of the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Jackie Robinson legacy. In a book that is part chronicle, part memoir, Kahn discusses the historical context of Jackie Robinson's integration of the game and recounts stories of other great baseball players.

Called "the best baseball writer in the business" Kahn has written 16 books and been a journalist for thirty years at Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, New York Herald Tribune, and the Saturday Evening Post among others.

Gergen DialogueIn this forum, we address Jackie Robinson's legacy. What approach did he take as a champion of civil rights? And where has the opening of baseball left us is today's fight for racial equality? What were some of the more memorable moments of Jackie Robinson's life?
