EDITOR'S NOTES
Commentary, Analysis
and Political Endorsements

April 24, 1998

in this forum:

The role of NewsHour contributors Stuart Taylor and Doris Kearns Goodwin was the topic of two Editor's Notes by Jim Lehrer during the week of April 13-17, 1998.

The first note concerned the decision to no longer ask Stuart Taylor to report on legal issues on the grounds his work beyond the NewsHour had blurred the distinction between commentary and news analysis. The second Editor's Note reported that Doris Kearns Goodwin had agreed to withdraw a political endorsement when it was pointed out that such actions were inappropriate for regular contributors to the program.

We received many letters and comments about these actions. Here are Executive Producer Les Crystal's responses to five questions which represent many of the issues raised by NewsHour viewers.

The who, what, when, where and why of the decisions regarding Stuart Taylor and Doris Kearns Goodwin.
Did the NewsHour warn Stuart Taylor? Is this because he is conservative?
Is Doris Kearns Goodwin leaving?
Will Stuart Taylor return to the NewsHour?
Did the White House pressure the NewsHour on the Stuart Taylor issue?
