Broc Sanford of Honolulu, Hawaii asks:
There are currently advertisements for an all-natural pill which first absorbs fat cells like a magnet, then passes them through the body. They claim that when taken before eating, the pill will remove four milligrams of fat, thus allowing anyone to eat anything without having to worry about fat consumption. How can I find out if the claims true, and is the health fad opening a moneymaking window that these types of products are taking advantage of?
Dr. Walter Willett responds:
I'm not aware of the specific advertisement for an all natural pill that absorbs fat like a magnet and then passes through the body. However, the removal of 4 mg of fat would be completely trivial and useless if this is what it did. Unfortunately, there are many claims for fads to make us thin, but most of these are either useless and some are actually harmful. The real solution to long-term weight control is regular daily exercise and, for most people, moderate restraint in total calories.
