Teachers Address Education Law

Student at chalkboard Three 2007 Teacher of the Year awardees answered your questions about how No Child Left Behind has affected their classrooms, as Congress considers renewing the law.
QUESTIONS
Has NCLB affected your ability to teach creatively and to deal with students individually?
How do you suggest that students be given the attention they need?
What are the consequences in this law for the student who refuses to make an effort to learn?
What is your approach to dealing with English language learners?
Do you agree with the need for accountability by schools?
What advice to you have for aspiring teachers and those just starting out?
Are there any positive aspects of this law?
How has this law affected students with language or math learning disabilities?

When No Child Left Behind became law in 2002, it was hailed as an opportunity to catch students who may have slipped through the system, though some educators complain it is making them too dependent on test results. This year, the law is up for reauthorization and Congress is considering some changes.

Three 2007 Teacher of the Year recipients, Alan Lawrence Sitomer of Lynwood High School in Lynwood, Calif., Josh Anderson of Olathe Northwest High School in Olathe, Kan., and Julie Caccamise of Woodrow Wilson Senior High School in Washington, D.C. answered your questions about how No Child Left Behind has affected their teaching styles.

Another forum features House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller, D-Calif., and ranking member Howard McKeon, R-Calif. -- http://www.pbs.org/newshour/forum/education/july-dec07/nclb_08-14.html
