TOM BLANTON, EDITOR OF "WHITE HOUSE E-MAIL"

Tom Blanton is executive director of the National Security Archive and an active participant in the White House e-mail lawsuit. He served as the Archive's first director of Planning and Research in 1986, and executive director in I992. Previously, he worked as a journalist, foundation staffer, campaign consultant, and Congressional aide. He co-authored "The Chronology" (New York: Warner Books, 1987), a book about the Iran-Contra affair, and served as a contributing editor to three other books. These include: "Eyes on the President" (San Francisco: Chronos Publishing, 1992), a book about George Bush; and "Atomic Audit" (Washington D.C.: Brookings Institution, forthcoming), a book about the nuclear arms race. Blanton's articles have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, and other publications.

He has held leadership positions in the American Library Association and the American Society of Access Professionals; he has appeared on national broadcasts ranging from ABC News Nightline to CNN's Crossfire; and he has performed "freedom of information missionary work" in two dozen foreign countries, from Japan to Albania.

The son of Reverend Leonard C. Blanton and the late Ruth Simpson Blanton, he is a graduate of Harvard University, where he was an editor of the Harvard Crimson. While at Harvard, Blanton won the Newcomen Prize in Material History for his honors thesis. He lives in Chevy Chase, Maryland, with his wife, Anne Lewis, and their daughter, Katherine.
