The chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is used to make many plastic products used in American homes, including baby bottles. Recently, two expert panels examined whether BPA is likely to have adverse effects on human health. Two scientsts answered your questions on BPA.
Do the softer plastic bottles (i.e. Poland Spring water, Vitamin water) contain BPA? We drink a lot of them.
Retha Newbold responds:
Most polycarbonate plastics (#7 recyclable) contain BPA but it is also found in other kinds of plastics. It is best to contact the manufacturer and ask about their specific product.
Earl Gray responds:
Many of the questions indicate that people are already very concerned about using products with BPA in them and already have stopped using these products. They want to know what levels are safe. I expect the scientific community will resolve this issue completely in a few years if the correct studies are done. Certainly if one is truly concerned about using this or any other product because of the potential chemical exposures they should not use them, if for no other reason than to eliminate stress.
Folks should also be aware that every official group that has looked at the risk of BPA to humans in Europe and other countries has not endorsed the low-dose studies and, for this reason, none of these products are regulated anywhere since the available science does not support such regulation.
