The chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is used to make many plastic products used in American homes, including baby bottles. Recently, two expert panels examined whether BPA is likely to have adverse effects on human health. Two scientsts answered your questions on BPA.
I am more concerned about BPA when we are reheating and warming up in the microwave. Does heat affect the release of BPA?
Retha Newbold responds:
Reports suggest that heating (for example in the microwave) and using harsh detergents enhances the leaching of BPA from plastics into foods and liquids.
Earl Gray responds:
Many of the questions indicate that people are already very concerned about using products with BPA in them and already have stopped using these products. They want to know what levels are safe. I expect the scientific community will resolve this issue completely in a few years if the correct studies are done. Certainly if one is truly concerned about using this or any other product because of the potential chemical exposures they should not use them, if for no other reason than to eliminate stress.
