Will the political peace in Northern Ireland hold?
June 4, 1998
in this forum:
Can the new agreement deal with violence in the streets? How is the Assembly election shaping up? How key is voter participation to the viability of the peace agreement? Will this Assembly be able to make the day-to-day decisions? How will outside influences (UK, Ireland, U.S.) affect the Assembly? Rebecca Williams of Tucson, AZ asks: Both of you pointed to the upcoming Assembly elections as the key hurdle to the viability of a political peace. With about three weeks to election day, how is that election shaping up?
Joe Carroll, of the Irish Times, responds:
The election campaign has not got really going as of this date as the parties have not finished choosing their candidates. This is a delicate problem for the Ulster Unionist Party which wants to ensure that only candidates supporting the Agreement are chosen. Already there has been some communal violence at an Orange parade and there could be more as the campagin progresses.
