Two things: I'm hoping to learn more about her personality through how she handles the questioning. It's not easy sitting in that hearing room for hours, day after day, and fielding questions, some of which are incoherent or have nothing to do with judging. She went through this before when she was nominated to the district court and then to the appellate court, and reportedly she did well. But this will be a new type of stage. I want to evaluate her temperament as well as how easily or not, and how thoroughly or not, she answers the questions. Second, I'll be listening to her answers about how she approaches judging a case and how narrowly or broadly she views the role of the Supreme Court, executive power, Congress' power under the commerce clause to make laws, the scope of the right to privacy and what, if anything, she has to say about prior Supreme Court decisions. The court is facing and will continue to face cases in all of those areas in the next few years. |
