Heather Rawley of Vista, California, asks: I'm having frequent difficulties with infections of the lung requiring antibiotics and steroids to control asthma. I take azmacort and ventilin 3-4 times daily. What can I do to prevent getting sick so often? Lifetime of serious asthma for 40 years.
Also, is their a relation between increased asthma symptoms and PMS/menstruation?
Allergy and asthma specialist Dr. John Winder responds:
When asthma gets out of control, one needs to look for triggers that might be responsible...have you checked to see if there might be a sinus infection contributing?...any new allergens (a new pet perhaps?) in your environment?...are you a smoker?...do you live/work with a smoker?...Are you taking your medication as your doctor has prescribed?...These are some of the questions we ask ourselves as allergists when someone with asthma begins to have increased symptoms even though we seem to be doing all the right things..I suggest that you speak with your doctor about your concerns.
Yes indeed, there can be an association between menstrual periods and flares of asthma...it's not common but definitely does occur.
