Exploring Generation Next

Forum Introduction
Judy Woodruff talking with young people Generation Next is a term for the 42 million 16-to-25 year olds who watched the Twin Towers collapse, experienced the shootings at Virginia Tech University, grew up online and statistically speaking are better educated than any other generation in history.
QUESTIONS
Did you have conversations that hint at how Gen Nexters will be different types of parents?
Why didn't you include caucasians who were unsuccessful?
Do you think nostalgia tainted your team's ability to properly research Gen Next?
Why were none of the seven Gen Nexters profiled Asian?
Why were single, successful women not included?
Shannon asks:
I appreciate the fact that you brought up problems with "helicopter" parents. Did you talk to any Gen Nexters about avoiding the pitfalls of becoming these parents? Did you hear how Gen Nexters will be different types of parents?
ANSWERS

Judy Woodruff responds:

Shannon: Thank you for your comment. We actually did not try to put the young people we profiled into the "I'm Special" category - we cast a wide net, across the country, seeking diversity of geography, race, religion and socio-economic background. We found the broadest possible range of young people and tried to reflect that in our profiles in both documentary hours. You raise an interesting idea: to talk with today's Generation Nexters about what sort of parents they will be. We did do that with John and Katie Fiske, in San Diego, and with a few others, but fully fleshed out this could be the topic of a fascinating report in the future.
