The Corps maintains situational awareness of levees throughout the area -- both federal and non-federal. Of note, the Corps of Engineers is directly responsible for only about 20 percent of the levees across the nation. The levees you ask about in Plaquemines are non-federal levees not under our oversight.
One of these levees overtopped in the Braithwaite/Scarsdale area on the east bank of the Plaquemines Parish, and local citizens responded by sandbagging the low spots with the assistance of the National Guard. The Corps of Engineers responded as well with technical and engineering advice to the Parish.
In addition, a second non-federal levee was breached at Citrus Lands on the west bank of Plaquemines Parish. The Corps responded to the Parish's request for assistance by providing 400 large sandbags, about a ton each, to help fill the 150-foot breach.
Thanks for the opportunity to dialogue with you.
