The Generation Next project kicks off with a visit to the Northeast at the end of June. In addition to exploring GenNext life in general, the team will focus on some specific themes during the trip to Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania, including the Indie music scene, financial debt and political involvement.
Throughout the trip, the RV will park in various locations (check
back soon for exact locations) to give GenNexters the opportunity
to "Speak Up, Be Heard" through our interactive computer kiosk.
Judy Woodruff and the team will head first to Connecticut to look at a cultural trend among GenNexters: Indie rock.
Then it's off to New York City to talk to young teachers about why they decided to join Teach for America or the NYC Teaching Fellows program, life in the classroom and their future.
Also in New York, Judy will talk with Anya Kamenetz, the 25-year-old blogger and author of "Generation Debt," focusing on the economic difficulties facing young people today.
A stop is also scheduled in southern Brooklyn and the Kingsborough
Community College campus. According to the Census Bureau, 26 percent
of Generation Next attends a two-year college, and KCC is a great
example.
Then, it's on to Pennsylvania to get GenNexters' take on politics.
The gubernatorial and Senate races in Pennsylvania are both tight
this year, and the young conservative movement is alive and well
in the state. We will be talking to at least one young conservative
about where he gets his political passion.
