An epidemic of meningococcal disease, sometimes referred to as spinal meningitis, has killed nearly 1,200 people in northern Nigeria and Niger in the first three months of 2009. Dr. Helmy Mekaoui, from Doctors Without Borders, discusses the group's efforts to vaccinate the population in Niger and prevent the epidemic from growing.

| The highest concentration of meningitis cases occurs in the "meningitis belt," which stretches from Senegal to Ethiopia. Of nearly 25,000 suspected cases of meningitis in this region so far this year, 85 percent were in Niger and Nigeria. |
