An epidemic of meningococcal disease, sometimes referred to as spinal meningitis, has killed nearly 1,200 people in northern Nigeria and Niger in the first three months of 2009. Dr. Helmy Mekaoui, from Doctors Without Borders, discusses the group's efforts to vaccinate the population in Niger and prevent the epidemic from growing.

| Each year during the dry season Niger and Nigeria see an increase in the incidence of meningitis as it spreads more quickly, but 2009 has seen the first major outbreak since 2002, and is already more severe. |
