1: Data from the World Health Organization's cumulative tally of reported probable cases of SARS. Patients suspected as having SARS -- because their symptoms match the disease and because there is reason to think that they may have been exposed to the virus -- are classified as probable cases when there is evidence of pneumonia.

2: Probable number of SARS cases in the U.S. is only available starting on April 17. Prior to that, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported the number of suspect cases.

3: Number of SARS cases the Chinese government has reported to the WHO. China has been criticized for under-reporting the extent of the SARS outbreak within its borders and there have been dramatic jumps in the number of reported cases as China has acknowledged the extent of the disease's reach.

4: U.S. data only included in total after April 17, when the U.S. began reporting probable cases.
