The Impeachment Hearings

1876: William Belknap
Secretary of War

Impeachment trial followed a congressional investigation of corruption in the Ulysses S. Grant administration. Secretary of War Belknap was charged with accepting money in exchange for a military appointment. Resigned from office and the Senate acquitted him on August 1, 1876.
