December 20, 2000 SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY-DESIGNATE PAUL O'NEILL Citing his experience both in the Office of Management and Budget and the private sector, George W. Bush has tapped Alcoa chairman Paul O'Neill to serve as the next Secretary of the Treasury.

Online Special: The Bush/Cheney Transition	Paul H. O’Neill is chairman of Alcoa and director of the company. He served as Alcoa’s chairman and Chief Executive Officer for 12 years, from June 1987 until May 1999. Mr. O’Neill was the first person from outside the company in its 99-year history elected to the top post. Mr. O’Neill has been an Alcoa director since January 10, 1986. Prior to joining Alcoa, Mr. O’Neill was President of the international Paper Company in New York. He joined IP in 1977 as Vice President- Planning, subsequently was named senior Vice President- planning and finance, and in 1983 senior vice president of IP’s paperboard and packaging segment. Mr. O’Neill was named president in 1985. Early in his career, Mr. O’Neill was an engineer for Morrison-Knudsen, Inc. in Anchorage, Alaska. He worked as a computer systems analyst with the U.S Veterans Administration from 1961 to 1966 and served on the staff of the U.S Office of Management and Budget from 1967 to 1977. He was deputy director of the OMB from 1974 to 1977. Mr. O’Neill was born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 4, 1935. He attended Fresno State College in California where he obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics. He holds a master’s degree in public administration from Indiana University. Additionally, he participated in graduate study programs in economics at Claremont Graduate University and George Washington University. M. O’Neill serves on several boards and advisory groups for business, civic and educational organizations.
