The unemployment rate jumped to 8.1 percent in February as the economy shed another 651,000 jobs. Among the groups feeling the impact of the gloomy job market are young adults, for whom unemployment has meant moving in with family members and spending months on the job hunt.

| For months, the economic crisis has dominated news coverage. The latest figures show that in February, job losses were widespread across most major industry sectors. Over the past 12 months, the number of unemployed persons has increased by about 5.0 million, and the unemployment rate has risen by 3.3 percentage points. |
