State math and reading scores as well as budgetary and demographic information are the latest statistics from the Department of Education's National Assessment of Educational Progress.

The No Child Left Behind Act requires states receiving federal education Title I funds to participate in NAEP testing for grades 4 and 8. State NAEP academic tests are administered every two years. The academic performance scores reflected in the map are for the 2004-5 school year. Scores are derived from representative samples taken from each state. Math and reading scores are based on a 0-500 scale.

Demographic information comes from the 2004-5 school year and budgetary information comes from the 2003-4 school year.

Schools' Adequate Yearly Progress information is derived from state reports submitted to the Department of Education. The standards for AYP include academic, safety and service goals each state has set and have been approved by the Department of Education. Information about schools meeting AYP standards is for the 2004-5 school year.
