Though the Justice Department has refused to confirm the names of any officials under scrutiny, Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, is widely believed to be the person named identified as Representative No. 1 in the Justice Department's plea deal with Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

The court documents say Representative No. 1 accepted lavish gifts of travel, meals, entertainment and campaign contributions, and then awarded congressional contracts to Abramoff's clients, at one point inserting a statement of support in the Congressional Record.

Ney, who denies any wrongdoing, has said he donated about $6,500 in contributions tied to Abramoff to charity.

"I obviously did not know and had no way of knowing the self-serving and fraudulent nature of Abramoff's activities," Ney said in a statement.

In January 2006, the congressman quit his position as head of the House Administration Committee after his name was leaked in connection to the Washington corruption probe.

Ney, who was born on July 5, 1954, in Wheeling, W.Va., is serving his fifth term in the House.
