Australia first attempted to gain British nuclear technology in1950 and continued to do so into the early 1970s. In 1969 the country began to plan for a plutonium producing nuclear reactor but abandoned its efforts after some time.
Australia has large indigenous supplies of uranium and is a uranium-exporting country, but has no nuclear power plants of its own nor has it ever built a nuclear weapon. There are, however, two nuclear reactors in Australia that produce radioactive materials mainly for medicinal purposes.
Australia has signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and is now one of the strongest supporters of anti-proliferation.
