Panoramic Camera (Pancam): This pair of high-resolution cameras can rotate 360 degrees to take panoramic images of the Martian surface.
This combination microscope and camera takes close-up images of the Martian rocks and soils.
This circular grinding tool burrows into volcanic and other rocks on Mars. Scientists then use other instruments to glean information from the interior of the rocks.
This tool analyzes the elemental chemistry of rocks and soils using alpha particles, which are emitted during radioactive decay, and X-rays, a type of electromagnetic radiation.
Many rocks on Mars contain iron, and this instrument is designed specifically to study iron-bearing minerals.
