One way researchers can navigate the icy waters at the Earth's poles is aboard a rugged, steel-plated ship known as an icebreaker.

Icebreaker Healy, The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Healy, commissioned in 2000, provides more than 4,200 square feet of scientific laboratory space and can accommodate up to 50 scientists. The ship is designed to travel continuously through ice 4.5 feet thick.
