At the Environmental Protection Agency's fifth annual Sustainable Design Expo on the National Mall in Washington, DC, college students exhibited their projects addressing sustainability issues including alternative energy, water purification and green buildings.

Magnetic Removal, Water mixed with iron oxide is poured into the top basin, and the arsenic in the water binds to the iron oxide. Then the water runs through the second basin, where a rotating magnet attracts the iron-arsenic particles. Finally, the now-clean water runs into the third basin.
