Orange County, Calif.'s new water treatment plant, called the Groundwater Replenishment System (GWS), is one of about 15 in the country that recycles wastewater into potable water. The water goes through three intensive treatment phases before it is delivered back into the groundwater supply.

| Microfiltration Pipes |
 |
| Microfiltration is the first step in the GWS treatment process. Pumps suck the water through a filter with holes 1/300 the size of a human hair, taking out bacteria, protozoa and suspended solids. These stainless steel pipes carry water to and from the filters, and the blue pumps provide the suction needed to force the water through the filters. |
