Ground Breaks for New Trade Center

Since planners began the process of deciding what would replace
the World Trade Center buildings destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001,
a tempest of criticism and indecision has swirled around the site.
Nonetheless, five years after the attacks, construction has begun
on a memorial at the attack site, a transit hub and five buildings,
including the 1,776-foot-tall Freedom Tower that will change the
Manhattan skyline.

As the charred remains of steel, concrete and Indiana limestone
were being removed from the Pentagon crash site after Sept. 11,
2001, officials set an ambitious goal: staff would be back in
their offices in the most severely damaged areas exactly a year
