President Calls for Economic Action, Touts Progress in Iraq

President Bush delivering State of the UnionPresident Bush used his last State of the Union speech Monday to try and reassure nervous Americans about the economy and the prospects for his $150 billion economic stimulus plan, saying "in the long run, Americans can be confident about our economic growth." On foreign policy, the president praised the results of last year's troop surge in Iraq while urging patience on the conflict. "Our enemies in Iraq have been hit hard. They are not yet defeated, and we can still expect tough fighting ahead," he said.

Analysts David Brooks of the New York Times and Ruth Marcus of the Washington Post consider President Bush's speech and assess the Democratic response, which was delivered by Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius.
