The late author Edward Abbey, 1927-1989, spent the divisive years of the Vietnam War amid the stone cliffs and sands of the Arches National Monument in southeastern Utah. In The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck captures the desolate atmosphere of the Great Depression in the 1930s. The novel follows the Joad
family across the United States as they travel from the desolate "Dust Bowl" in Oklahoma to the promised land of California. Towards the end of their journey, the family confronts a flood in a migrant camp. The Grapes of Wrath captured the Pulitzer Prize in 1940.
