THIRD PARTY CANDIDATES
Harry Browne Interview, July 10, 1996
I want to thank you for your interview with the Libertarian Party's Candidate, Harry Browne, last night.
It is refreshing to see national candidates other than those from the two biggest parties spotlighted.
Charlayne (Hunter-Gault) did an excellent job, by not shirking from tough questions - i.e. "Why haven't you voted for 20+ years" - and by taking Harry seriously.
I hope the Newshour will continue to look at third party candidates, such as the Reform Party, rather than focusing solely on the Republicans and Democrats, to let the American Public know that there are more than just two choices for President.

Campaign Coverage
It was interesting, if a bit disconcerting to see your interview with the Libertarian presidential candidate this evening. I hope that you will devote as much time to Ralph Nader's campaign in the future. It would be nice to hear from a multiplicity of voices during this campaign, and not just the two, sometimes indistinguishable, major parties.

Interview with Libertarian candidate, Harry Browne
I loved it! Bless you All.
I have been a viewer and fan for many years and I always liked to to be able to say I never could never discern the political views of any of your interviewers.
Charlayne (Hunter-Gault)...was respectful and professional. That interview was a masterpiece.

Political coverage of Harry Browne and others
I just watched a piece about Harry Browne on your July 10 edition of the NewsHour. It was a terrific interview, and Mr. Browne was impressive.
I watched part of the Libertarian Convention last weekend on CSPAN and was also impressed with how organized and professional they seemed. I'm starting to think that the Libertarian Party, as opposed to the Reform Party, has become the third party to watch.
Does Mr. Browne give stump speeches? Does their VP candidate give stump speeches? I think it would be good if you added Mr. Browne to the rotation in your on-going "Where They Stand" segment - as this segment is starting to get a little stale because most of us already know everything we want to know about Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, and there isn't much they have to say that is news.
I also spend a fair amount of time on-line and Harry Browne seems to be very popular there - he even leads in most of the on-line polls. And though these polls are not scientific, the general feeling is that the Libertarians are the most popular political party on the Internet, an environment where media preference and small bank accounts aren't impediments to getting the message out.
I think it would also be valuable to hear what some of the other alternate candidates have to say -- any candidate who is likely to be on the ballet in all the states and who can show some support deserves to be heard. Harry Brown and Ross Perot fit this description and maybe others like Mr. Lamm and Ralph Nader will also. What looks to be an very dull campaign season could turn out very interesting if some alterative views were entered to the public debate.
