President
Franklin Roosevelt sitting at his worktable before the fireplace
at his retreat in Warm Springs, Ga. Here we see President Roosevelt
at his most human: careworn by the Depression and the war, and with
his leg, paralyzed by childhood polio, clearly braced. Americans did
not see images of the president with his disability in any way evident.
Margaret Lynch Suckley, or "Daisy" as Mr. Roosevelt fondly called
her, was a distant cousin and the president's closest companion during
his final years. Thus, she had access to his private moments that
no press photographer could gain. (Photo taken between March 30 and
April 12, 1945)
