| The
Media Unit of the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer was established in August of 1998 to
provide something unique on broadcast television: regular reporting and analysis
of the information industries. The idea behind it is simple: in this information
age, the media have become key players in the democratic process. It is important
to understand not just the news itself, but how and why it is reported as it is.
To that end, we follow
and report on developments, trends and controversies as they arise in the worlds
of television, cable, newspapers, magazines, the Internet
and publishing. We use a variety of formats, from long-form tape pieces to brief
setups and discussions to explore the ethical and professional issues that come
to the fore. Accountability is a key element: since the media hold government
and others accountable, it seems only fair that news organizations be subjected
to the same kind of scrutiny. The
Media Unit includes myself, as correspondent and senior producer; Anne Davenport,
producer; Morgan Till, associate producer; Samara Aberman, reporter; and Lete
Childs, production assistant. The unit is funded by grants from the Pew Charitable Trusts and the John
S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Finally,
we appreciate hearing from viewers about the segments we do and those you would
like to see us do. Good ideas are always welcome. Please don't be shy.
Sincerely,
Terence
