1870: Marries Livy in Elmira, New York. The couple settles in Buffalo, N.Y.

1872: "Roughing It," a semi-biographical sketch of travels in Nevada and California, is published. Daughter Olivia Susan (Susy) Clemens is born.

1873: On trip to England, Clemens meets fellow literary celebrities Lewis Carroll, Robert Browning, Ivan Turgenev and Anthony Trollope. Publishes first novel, "The Gilded Age" with co-author Charles Dudley Warner.

1874: Daughter Clara Langdon Clemens is born.

1876: "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" published.
