North American Otter pipe, Mound City, Ohio, Middle Woodland period, 200 BC to AD 100. Excavations in mounds in Ohio have uncovered superbly carved pipes and other exotic trade goods and fine artworks.


Originally presented as a BBC radio series and now a book published in America, "A History of the World in 100 Objects" tells the story of humanity using artifacts selected from the British Museum.
