Rep. Leo Ryan

People's Temple follower Larry Layton stands with police following his arrest for the November 1978 murder of California congressman Leo Ryan. Layton lived in Jonestown - a cult commune lead by Jim Jones in the South American country of Guyana. Rep. Ryan went to Guyana to investigate alleged human rights abuses, and was killed by a gunman as he tried to help people evacuate the commune. More than 900 members of Jonestown later committed suicide by drinking poisonous Kool-Aid. Jackie Spier, who was one of Ryan's aides, was wounded in the attack. She now represents Ryan's old district in Congress. For more: Jonestown (American Experience)
