On March 30, 1981, President Reagan was shot by John Hinckley, Jr. outside a Washington, D.C., hotel. Hinckley, inspired by the movie "Taxi Driver," thought he could impress actress Jodie Foster by shooting Reagan. Reagan survived, but aide James Brady was paralyzed in the shooting. Brady subsequently championed an assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. For more: Remembering Ronald Reagan (NewsHour)
