Rep. Cornelius Springer Hamilton, R-Ohio, was killed by his son on Dec. 12, 1867. Other members of Congress who were murdered include Rep. James Hinds, an Arkansas Congressman killed by Ku Klux Klan members on Oct, 22, 1868, and Rep. John Pinckney of Texas, who was shot on April 24, 1905 by a lawyer who opposed Prohibition. According to the Congressional Research Service, more than 60 members of Congress have died of something other than natural causes while in office.
