Supernova Mystery Explained?
Scientists believe they have solved the mystery of what causes the tremendously large, fantastically bright Supernovae 1a explosions. The source of these thermonuclear explosions was previously unknown. Using an image of a supernova remnant taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, scientists have determined the explosion was caused by the two white dwarfs -- compact, dying stars -- spiraling closer and closer and colliding.
