ATryn Goats

These goats have been genetically engineered to produce antithrombin, a human plasma protein with anticoagulant properties, in their milk. The antithrombin is given to patients who have a hereditary deficiency of the protein during surgery.

Goats were chosen for the procedure because they reproduce more rapidly than cattle and their milk contains more protein than rabbits or mice.
