Crystal is a rare African black-footed kitten who was born to a domestic house cat at Audubon Nature Institute in New Orleans.
Crystal is also a clone. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature lists her species as vulnerable, with a declining population in the wild. Crystal was born to a domestic house cat surrogate, part of an effort to increase the species' numbers using preserved DNA.
But for every successful animal clone, there are hundreds of failed attempts.
