The CIA has been looking into transforming animals into biotic/abiotic hybrids as tools of national security for more than 50 years.

In 2006, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency put out a call for "innovative proposals to develop technology to create insect-cyborgs." University of California, Berkeley engineer Michel Maharbiz's response was this flower beetle, which can be operated via remote controlled via "Beetle Commander" software.
