When Cancer & Pregnancy Collide

Even in the second and third trimesters, the chemotherapy agents coursing through Minnie's system could have caused growth restriction, low birth weight, spontaneous preterm labor or bone marrow suppression. And because one of the agents, doxorubicin, is associated with cardiomyopathy, or heart muscle disease, Aziz kept a close eye on Kieron's heart.
But frequent ultrasounds and non-stress tests continued to show that everything was coming along just fine.
The mass in Minnie's breast started to dissolve 24 hours after treatment began. And by the time she was 37 weeks pregnant, the ovarian and vaginal tumor was almost completely gone, too.
In the end -- against the odds -- a vaginal birth was possible.
